AFP holds online climate digital investigation workshop with journalists in Brazil ahead of COP30

AFP offered a digital investigation workshop for Brazilian journalists on September 29 and October 6, focusing on ways to counter climate misinformation in the run-up to COP30 — the UN climate change conference to be held in Belém in November.

The program was organized with support from the French Embassy in Brazil and consisted of two intensive three-hour online training sessions. A total of 75 free scholarships were offered to journalists from all regions of Brazil.

The session, led by Maria Clara Pestre, Digital Investigation Editor in Rio de Janeiro, covered the main types of climate misinformation identified by AFP’s global fact-checking team, essential fact-checking techniques, tips for identifying “greenwashing,” and where to find reliable data.

“In a very informative way, I was able to understand new methods of investigation and also learn terms I hadn’t encountered before. Everything I learned will definitely help me a lot during COP and in my professional life,” said participant Isabella Lima, a journalist from the Terra portal who will be in Belém to cover the climate summit in November.

This initiative is part of a series of workshops and training sessions conducted by AFP’s fact-checking team across Latin America.
