Arabic-writing correspondent, Jerusalem
Starting date: AS SOON AS POSSIBLE
Deadline for applications: March 5, 2026
Location: Jerusalem
Middle East and North Africa region (MENA)
THE JOB
AFP is looking for a dynamic, energetic Arabic-language reporter, who speaks Hebrew, to join its busy Jerusalem bureau, helping to shape the often-hectic news file from Israel and the Palestinian territories. The job requires a cool head and excellent writing skills and a commitment to quality and accuracy.
A keen interest and knowledge of the issues surrounding the Israeli Palestinian conflict is essential. The issue dominates daily coverage since the start of the Israel-Hamas war in October 2023 and its regional spillovers.
Other topics which regularly feature include Israeli policy towards Iran’s nuclear programme and religious affairs, given Jerusalem’s location at the centre of the world’s three monotheistic faiths.
You should also have a keen eye and interest in all aspects of life in both Israeli and Palestinian societies, from music to culture, science and hi-tech. Israel and the Palestinian territories are young, and vibrant societies and there is wide client interest in broader stories about what is shaping and shaking daily trends.
You will work under the authority of the bureau chief and his deputy, as well as the regional editors-in-chief.
You are expected to help coordinate with our Gaza and West Bank correspondents, who are mainly Arabic-speaking, and to assist them in writing their stories.
You should have a keen eye for the visual and multimedia aspect of coverage and closely coordinate with the photo, video and graphics departments.
You should be familiar with the issues involved in handling user generated content and AFP’s guidelines concerning the use of UGC, especially to find and verify amateur videos.
As a general rule, you commit to respecting AFP's ethics charter as well as all the editorial guidelines in force and the AFP Stylebook.
You must be ready to work long days and a wide range of hours, including early mornings and late nights, as well as weekends, and to be on call.
In an ever-changing media environment, the nature of the job could evolve in line with coverage demands and the requirements of an increasingly diverse client base.
SKILLS REQUIRED
Dynamic and energetic, and brimming with ideas, you will need excellent Arabic writing skills.
You need to demonstrate an ability to work under pressure and be available to work evenings and weekends when necessary.
Native-level Arabic, but an excellent level of Hebrew and English is also needed. Knowledge of French would be a plus.
A team player, passionate about the news
You must have undergone hostile environment training or do so as quickly as possible. Training in hostile environments will be offered to those who wish to participate.
