Arabic-speaking Journalist

Starting date: as soon as possible

Deadline for applications: November 20, 2025

Location: Ramallah, MENA region

THE JOB

Do you have the contacts for an exclusive on the next Palestinian Authority president, to secure an exclusive interview with a fugitive Hamas leader, or to speak to witnesses besieged during an Israeli raid in the West Bank?

If so, AFP is inviting applications for a dynamic and dedicated Arabic-writing journalist to be based in our Ramallah office, covering everything from the conflict with Israel, Palestinian politics and the lives of the people of the West Bank.

You must have a deep knowledge of Palestinian society, politics and institutions, a proven skill in writing punchy, engaging breaking news stories and the ability to adapt English copy filed by colleagues in the West Bank, Gaza and Jerusalem into Arabic.

You must have a talent for pitching and writing original stories, and a keen eye for investigative, in-depth enterprise stories. A particular focus on visually driven stories that differentiate our file from the competition is key in the region, where we strive to go beyond the conflict to tell the stories of people’s daily lives, as well as the trends and culture in Palestinian society.

The beat is as riveting as it is testing. You will be grappling with complex politics and conflict, as part of a wide-ranging file that also incorporates technological innovations, environmental issues, and economic difficulties.

You must be able to rapidly analyse information and break news to relay it accurately and efficiently to AFP's clients not just in the Middle East, but across the world.

Coverage of the Israeli Palestinian conflict is intensely scrutinized by all sides, and you must ensure accurate and comprehensive coverage at all times rigorously respecting AFP’s editorial guidelines and fundamental principle of neutrality.

It is important to stress that all AFP journalists contribute to AFP’s newsgathering process in all formats, working towards the common goal of producing high quality multimedia journalism.

You should have a keen eye for the visual and multimedia aspect of coverage and work to coordinate with the photo, video and graphics departments. You should also be familiar with the issues involved in handling user generated content. You will contribute to the fight against misinformation by helping fact-checkers in the network.

The successful candidate will work under the authority of the Jerusalem bureau chief and his deputy, in coordination with text, photo and video colleagues in Ramallah, Jerusalem and Gaza.

You must be ready to work long days and a wide range of hours, including early mornings, late nights and weekends as required for the smooth functioning of the bureau.

In an ever-changing media environment, the nature of the job could evolve in line with coverage demands and the requirements of an increasingly diverse client base.

SKILLS REQUIRED

  • The selected candidate will have proven journalism experience and will have excellent news editing and writing skills.

  • In an environment of unpredictable events and often challenging conditions, you must be able to work under pressure and remain level-headed while demonstrating excellent news judgment and knowledge of current affairs.

  • As a team player, you can react quickly to breaking news. You must be collaborative and open to discussions with editors in Jerusalem and across the wider AFP network.

  • We are seeking an Arabic-writing reporter, but a strong command of English is a prerequisite. Knowledge of French and/or Hebrew are a plus.
