Phil Chetwynd

Phil Chetwynd was named Global News Director of Agence France-Presse (AFP) in January 2019. A British national, he previously served as the Agency's Global Editor-in-Chief at its Paris headquarters.

With a journalism career spanning over 25 years, Phil Chetwynd holds a degree in media and languages. Before joining AFP in 1996, he gained valuable experience in the British regional press. As a seasoned reporter within AFP's global network, Chetwynd has worked in the Middle East, Europe, and Asia, and has undertaken missions in more than 20 countries, including Afghanistan, Pakistan, North Korea, Israel, and the United States.  

Between 2002 and 2012, he was stationed at AFP's Asia-Pacific headquarters in Hong Kong, where he held the position of Regional Editor-in-Chief.

Marc Lavine has been AFP’s Regional Director for North America since late 2021, after serving as the company’s Sales and Marketing Director for Asia and the Pacific and previously as Editor-in-Chief for Asia. Educated in the UK, France and South Africa, he started his career in journalism working in local news agencies in the United Kingdom  and joined AFP as a desk editor in the 1990s. He has served in a range of posts across the world, including Australia, New Zealand and Pacific Bureau Chief, Los Angeles/ West Coast US Bureau Chief, Korea Bureau Chief, News Editor for Southeast Asia in Bangkok, Kabul correspondent and also as editor-in-chief of an AFP sports internet news agency start-up in Hong Kong.

Michael Mainville

Michael Mainville has been AFP’s Asia-Pacific Regional Director since April 2023, based in Hong Kong. He was previously bureau chief for four years in Moscow, where he managed the agency’s operations across the former Soviet Union and oversaw coverage of the outbreak of the war in Ukraine. He has worked at AFP since 2007, including as desk chief and deputy chief editor for the Middle East and North Africa, Paris-based France reporter and international correspondent, and Tbilisi-based Caucasus correspondent, covering stories including the Syrian and Libyan civil wars, international peace talks and summits, and the 2008 Georgia-Russia conflict. A graduate of Carleton University’s School of Journalism in Ottawa, he started his career as a crime and city hall reporter for the Montreal Gazette.
