THE JOB
AFP is seeking a dynamic and motivated native-level English-speaking correspondent to join its reporting team in Berlin, Germany. The successful candidate will be an all-rounder brimming with story ideas and capable of
covering anything from politics to economics to culture. They will also be expected to develop sources for enterprise reporting, deliver added-value journalism, and break exclusive news.
Germany’s fast-moving news environment requires sharp news judgment and the ability to identify breaking developments and turn them into engaging, accurate stories for a broad international readership within minutes.
A strong team spirit is essential. The successful candidate must be able to work closely and collaboratively with video and photo teams, as well as across AFP’s wider network — including close coordination with the Frankfurt bureau, the Munich team, and German-language wire correspondents.
While the post is based in Berlin, the correspondent will be required to travel across Germany, and occasionally beyond, to cover major breaking news.
SKILLS REQUIRED:
✓ Proven professional experience in written journalism in English.
✓ Ability to write lively, compelling copy across a broad range of topics.
✓ Wire agency experience is a strong advantage.
✓ A very good command of German is essential.
✓ Working knowledge of French, including the ability to translate accurately from French into English.
✓ Strong knowledge of German politics, economy and culture.
✓ Video skills are an advantage.
✓ Strong team player with a collaborative mindset, especially when working with video, photo and cross-bureau teams.
✓ Driving license.
