Photojournalism: The “Marai Photo Grant” is back, with the 2025 edition focused on raising awareness about climate change

After a three-year hiatus, the “Marai Photo Award” becomes the “Marai Photo Grant” in 2025. The award is organised by Agence France-Presse in honour of Shah Marai, former photo chief at AFP in Kabul. Shah Marai, who was an inspiration for Afghan photographers throughout his career, was killed in the line of duty at the age of 41 in a suicide attack on April 30, 2018 in Kabul.

AFP photographer Christina Assi carries the Olympic Flame in honour of journalists killed on duty

AFP photographer Christina Assi, who was severely injured on assignment last October in Lebanon, will carry the Olympic Flame on Sunday, 21 July, in Vincennes, France, "to pay tribute to those who have fallen" while doing their job as journalists, she explained.


Christina Assi, 29, was struck by a tank shell on October 13, 2023 while reporting on cross-border clashes between the Israeli army and armed groups in southern Lebanon, alongside six other colleagues.

At its meeting on 20 April 2023, AFP's Board of Directors approved the accounts for the 2022 financial year, which confirm the Agency's continued financial recovery.


The Agency's commercial revenues reached €208.6 million, rising by 5.3% (+10.4 million) compared to 2021, at comparable exchange rates. For the first time in the Agency's history, the €200 million threshold for commercial revenue was exceeded. Business was driven by the Agency's three strategic development areas: video, digital investigation, and corporate and institutional activity.

Ukrainian news agency trains in fact-checking with AFP and APA

After training with journalists from Agence France-Presse and the Austrian news agency APA, Ukraine’s largest news agency Ukrinform has started writing its own fact-check articles in an effort to confront a wave of war-related disinformation.
