Sophie Huet appointed Global Editor-in-Chief of AFP. Jean-Luc Bardet replaces her as Deputy Global News Director

Sophie Huet is taking over as AFP Global Editor-in-Chief, replacing Phil Chetwynd, who was appointed Global News Director on January 9th 2019. Jean-Luc Bardet succeeds Sophie Huet as Deputy News Director. He will retain his current portfolio as France director. They will take up their new duties on February 4th.

AFP’s Africa coverage showcased at Visa pour l’image 2018

From September 1 to 16 the international photo festival Visa Pour l’Image will pay tribute to AFP photographers in Africa with exhibitions featuring the work of John Wessels in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Luis Tato’s coverage of the Kenyan elections and an evening screening of Mohamed Abdiwahab’s coverage of Somalia. Also featured will be Brendan Smialowski’s coverage of the White House, and there will be a tribute to Shah Marai who was killed in an attack in Kabul last April.

AFP extends Facebook fact-checking collaboration to three more countries

AFP is expanding a fact-checking contract with Facebook to Canada, Indonesia and the Philippines in an extension of its existing collaboration in France, Brazil, Colombia and Mexico. The Agency will produce fact-checking articles that will be made freely available via blogs. Some of these will be moved on AFP's wires.

AFP is deploying a 140-strong team to cover the sporting event of the year, the FIFA World Cup. It will provide real-time text, photo, video, infographics and videographics coverage of the tournament, which takes place in Russia from June 14 to July 15.
