For the sixth consecutive year, Athens Photo World and the National Garden are joining forces to present this open-air exhibition, in partnership with OPANDA (the City of Athens Organisation for Culture, Sports and Youth) — and, this year, with AFP. By bringing these images into the heart of the city, the exhibition creates a direct encounter between world-class photojournalism and daily urban life.
Entitled Extreme Locations of our Planet, the exhibition is dedicated to places few dare to visit — or even reach. AFP photographers have captured rare moments in some of the world’s most remote and inhospitable environments, whether due to geography or extreme natural conditions.
Through a selection of 48 striking images, AFP photojournalists bring these far-flung places closer to the public. From the polar ice caps of the Arctic and Greenland to Argentina’s salt flats, the dunes of Africa and Saudi Arabia, the Mongolian steppes and the volcanoes of Iceland — this vast, awe-inspiring world is brought to life in the heart of Athens.
Launched in 2019, Athens Photo World has become a key cultural event in the Greek capital. Open to the public, it showcases photojournalism through outdoor exhibitions, screenings and panel discussions, in collaboration with both international and local institutions.
