An AFP Videographic Nominated for the 46th Annual News & Documentary Emmy Awards
An AFP videographic, designed by Julie Pereira in collaboration with Emmanuelle Michel (script) and Jon Walter (voiceover), has been nominated in the Outstanding Graphic Design category at the 46th annual News and Documentary Emmy Awards. The video features the International Criminal Court (ICC).
Established in 2002 in The Hague, the ICC is tasked with investigating and prosecuting individuals accused of the gravest crimes, particularly in situations where national jurisdictions lack either the will or capacity to do so.
This videographic was created to clarify the Court’s structure and role, and is intended for use by clients of Agence France-Presse, one of the world’s largest news agencies.
Striking a Balance: Editorial Neutrality and Artistic Sensibility
AFP’s goal is to reach the widest possible audience, and graphic design is considered a key journalistic tool. Animated formats are particularly effective at illustrating complex or abstract concepts, and graphics are crafted to complement, not overshadow, the underlying information.
In this videographic, the serious nature of the ICC’s work is reflected through a high-contrast black-and-white aesthetic, softened by subtle touches of pale pink.
Hand-drawn textures add depth to this sober visual language.
These stylistic choices aim to balance the gravity of the subject with a degree of delicacy, avoiding sensationalism while still conveying emotional and thematic complexity.
Particular care was given to character design, with symbolism and metaphor playing a central role.
Designed for Versatility and Reach
The videographic was adapted into a versatile multilingual format, available in four languages via AFP Forum and AFP News, the agency’s professional download platforms.
It was also shared on AFP’s YouTube channels and reformatted into vertical video for use across social media, as part of the broader output of AFP’s Visual and Data Journalism Department.
