GreenYellow supports retailer Jerónimo Martins' energy transition with 18 self-consumption solar plants in Portugal

22 Set 2026 - 09:00

Deployed on the rooftops of Pingo Doce and Recheio Cash & Carry stores, as well as at a site operated by Luis Vicente, a Portuguese fruit and vegetable producer, the installations have a total capacity of 8 MWp and generate approximately 11.6 GWh of renewable electricity per year .

By generating part of the electricity required for its operations directly on site, Jerónimo Martins reduces its exposure to energy price volatility and improves the predictability of its energy costs , while contributing to the decarbonization of its operations.

A project designed around the sites’ energy needs

The 18 solar plants will avoid more than 1,230 tonnes of CO₂ emissions per year , equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of more than 3,860 households .

In the retail sector, where energy consumption is significant and continuous, particularly for refrigeration, lighting and air conditioning, solar self-consumption makes it possible to use the electricity generated directly where it is needed. Energy thus becomes a lever for electrification and, more broadly, decarbonization, while also driving operational performance and competitiveness.

GreenYellow’s expertise supporting multisite networks

Spread across 18 sites in different regions of Portugal , the installations illustrate a key challenge for companies operating multisite networks: deploying a consistent energy strategy at scale while adapting it to the specific characteristics of each asset .

Each site has its own constraints, including building and rooftop configurations, grid connection requirements, technical and regulatory considerations, and consumption profiles. GreenYellow therefore combines standardized processes, local expertise and solutions tailored to each site’s specific characteristics .

The ability to replicate and scale energy solutions across multiple sites while managing the specific constraints of each location is one of GreenYellow’s key areas of expertise and an essential lever for accelerating corporate decarbonization.

“In the retail sector, energy is a strategic operational cost and an important factor in competitiveness. Generating renewable energy directly on site enables our customers to better control their costs, reduce their exposure to market volatility and make tangible progress towards their decarbonization goals. The project with Jerónimo Martins demonstrates our ability to deploy solutions across a multisite network at scale, while adapting each installation to the specific characteristics and needs of each site,” said Luis Almeida, Managing Director of GreenYellow Portugal .

An Energy-as-a-Service model enabling deployment without upfront investment

The project is being delivered under a 15-year on-site power purchase agreement (PPA) , using a model that enables Jerónimo Martins to benefit from the solar electricity generated on its sites without directly financing the installations.

GreenYellow is responsible for the assessment, investment, design, engineering, procurement, installation, operation and maintenance of the solar plants throughout the contract term .

This tailored, turnkey approach enables companies to rapidly deploy energy infrastructure across multiple sites while benefiting from a single partner responsible for the entire project over the long term.

It is particularly suited to companies operating multisite networks, for which managing multiple independent energy projects can create significant investment, coordination and operational challenges.

Multisite and multigeography expertise supporting the energy transition

The Jerónimo Martins project builds on GreenYellow’s expertise working with major groups operating multisite and multigeographic networks .

From Poland to Portugal, as well as France, Spain and the other markets where GreenYellow operates, the Group supports its customers in deploying energy solutions at scale, combining international expertise with strong local capabilities .

This deployment capacity is a key lever for accelerating the transformation of companies’ energy systems: generating renewable energy close to where it is consumed, progressively electrifying energy uses and developing greater flexibility to optimize the energy performance of sites .

With this project, GreenYellow continues to support retail and industrial companies in their transition to a new energy era, making decarbonization, electrification and flexibility key drivers of sustainable performance.
