AFP, EFE join forces to fight piracy
Agence France-Presse, the world's third largest international news agency, and EFE, the leading Spanish-language news agency, agreed Saturday to join forces in a fight against piracy and the uncredited use of their material. The agreement was signed at the 66th assembly of the Inter-American Press Association being held in the city of Merida.
"EFE and Agence France-Presse (AFP), two of the largest international news agencies, have reached an agreement to jointly combat piracy and the improper use of credits in information reproduced by the media," it said.
The statement said they would use "common tools and technologies" to detect the improper use of their content by pirates and will employ legal experts to defend their intellectual property.
"EFE and AFP want to underscore by means of this agreement the danger that the fraudulent use of their news output poses to the agencies' credibility and future, and the importance of defending credits," it said.
"For that reason, they will encourage other international news agencies to join this common struggle that they now begin," the joint statement said.
