On the occasion of the 20th edition of the UNICEF Photo of the Year Awards, AFP photographer Angelos Tzortzinis has received the UNICEF Photo of the Year Award.
The British daily notably praised the Shanghai-based Chilean photographer for his coverage of the Wuhan crisis, the city where the first cases of Covid-19 were detected. He has made trips to the Chinese megalopolis all throughout 2020, most recently documenting its return to life.
AFP has been looking at this issue for six months, in partnership with seven other media groups (Reuters, Schibsted, La Nacion, Reach PLC, Deutsche Welle, Nikkei, Nice Matin). The working group, brought together by Polis -- a media think tank at the London School of Economics -- presented its findings on December 8 at the JournalismAI Festival.
AFP is part of a new African alliance to combat misinformation around the Covid-19 pandemic and other health emergencies which was launched Thursday, December 3rd by the World Health Organisation (WHO).
AFP will have star billing at this year’s Hong Kong Film Festival, with top journalists from the Agency joining post-screening discussions and a photo exhibition by prize-winning photographer Yasuyoshi Chiba displayed throughout the event.

Once again, AFP is taking part in Médias en Seine, the 1st international festival celebrating the media of tomorrow, organised by Franceinfo and Les Echos. The event will take place in Paris on November 19th, for a third edition which will be 100% virtual in light of the sanitary situation.
For the 3rd edition of the Paris Peace Forum, AFP Africa Director Boris Bachorz AFP will be moderating a panel on Africa’s response to Covid-19.
The Inter American Press Association is a non-governmental organisation defending press freedom on the American continent (South, Central and North America) that was founded in 1942 and is based in Miami, US.
“The election of Maria Lorente is a tremendous sign of the recognition of AFP’s work”, said Pierre Ausseill, AFP Director for Latin America, “It is incredibly rare for a member of a global news agency to be represented on the board”.
