Spanning the mouth of the Tamsui River, the bridge serves as both a major transportation project and a recognizable architectural landmark, establishing a new urban symbol for Taiwan. Designed by Zaha Hadid Architects, the project gained international attention throughout its development and was selected by CNN as one of the “11 Most Important Infrastructure Projects of 2025,” making it one of the few Taiwanese infrastructure projects to receive global recognition.
The bridge features a single-tower asymmetric cable-stayed design that reduces the number of bridge towers and minimizes visual impact on the estuary landscape. Its vertically extended tower creates a new skyline focal point, balancing structural efficiency with landscape integration while reflecting Taiwan’s mature capabilities in combining engineering and architectural aesthetics.
To celebrate the opening, the “Danjiang Bridge Together Arts Festival” was held under the concept of “Together - March on the Bridge,” featuring walking events, parades, concerts, and immersive programs that encouraged public engagement with the bridge as a shared cultural space.
The opening program emphasized participation and immersive experiences, allowing visitors to walk across the bridge, attend performances, and interact within the space. Resting and viewing areas along the bridge deck enabled visitors to enjoy the sea view and experience the bridge as a new form of public space, while collaboration with local communities strengthened cultural exchange and co-creation.
The opening ceremony, titled “Thanksgiving - Beautiful Night Opening,” featured "Light Chain", a new work by Cloud Gate Dance Theatre inspired by the bridge’s structure and mechanics, further connecting architecture, engineering, and performing arts through a large-scale site-specific performance.
The completion of the Danjiang Bridge not only enhances transportation efficiency and regional connectivity but also elevates the cultural value of public infrastructure, marking a significant milestone in Taiwan’s urban development.
