Die deutsche Davis-Cup-Auswahl um US-Open-Champion Alexander Zverev steht vor dem Einzug in das Finalturnier der besten Acht in Bologna. Im dritten Spiel der Zweitrundenbegegnung gegen Kroatien lieferte sich das Doppel Kevin Krawietz und Tim Pütz mit den Tokio-Olympiasiegern Nikola Mektic und Mate Pavic ein unterhaltsames Duell und gewann mit 7:5, 6:2. Das Duo aus Coburg und Frankfurt/Main, das vorige Woche im US-Open-Finale noch seinen ersten gemeinsamen Grand-Slam-Titel verpasst hatte, stellte damit auf 2:1 für Deutschland.
Da im Best-of-five-Format drei Siege zum Weiterkommen nötig sind, kann Zverev im westfälischen Halle gegen Dino Prizmic alles klarmachen. Der 21 Jahre alte Kroate, der in dieser Saison Topspieler wie Novak Djokovic und Ben Shelton bezwang, hatte tags zuvor die deutsche Nummer zwei Daniel Altmaier geschlagen. Im Fall einer Niederlage käme es im Anschluss zu einem entscheidenden Einzel zwischen Altmaier und Matej Dodig.
