انتقد الاتحاد الأوروبي بشدة الانتخابات التشريعية الروسية الخاضعة لرقابة صارمة، متهما الكرملين باللجوء الى القمع لحرمان الناخبين من "خيار حقيقي بشأن مستقبل بلادهم".
وقال المتحدث باسم المفوضية الأوروبية كريستيان ويغاند للصحافيين إن "الطريقة التي تُجرى بها انتخابات مجلس الدوما تسلط الضوء على التلاشي المستمر والمتزايد للديموقراطية في روسيا"، مضيفا أن "السلطات الروسية واصلت تصعيد القمع الممنهج والمؤسسي لإقصاء أي قوى معارضة ديموقراطية".
