German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on Sunday described as a "disaster" his CDU party's heavy loss in an election in a northeastern state but vowed to push on with a reform drive.
"The reforms have to come," he said after his centre-right party crashed to around five percent in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, according to exit polls. "I am taking on this responsibility, because I want to move our country forward."
