AFP Photographer Cristina Quicler wins the 35th Andalusian Journalism Award, photography category
AFP photographer Cristina Quicler has won the 35th Andalusian Journalism Award in the photography category for her picture “Rocío Chico, traslado de la Virgen del Rocío”, awarded by the Junta de Andalucía (Regional Government of Andalucia).
The image shows an event that only takes place once every 7 years : Virgen del Roci travelling by night, from its hermitage in El Rocío to the town of Almonte, surrounded by its followers.
The jury highlighted the excellent technical quality of the picture and the different perspective it offers on the Andalusian religious and cultural tradition.
Born in Catellón de La Plana in 1972, Cristina Quicler studied Image and Sound, specialising in production. Her career as a photographer began in 1999, when she started working for a local Seville newspaper, Sevilla Información. In 2000, she began working for AP as a correspondent in Andalusia and Southern Portugal. In 2003, she became a correspondent for AFP in Andalusia. Thanks to AFP’s international network, her pictures of Andalusia have travelled all over the world, representing this Spanish region with passion and respect.
Awarded by the Junta de Andalucia, the Andalusian Journalism Award aims to reward original and high-quality journalism has reflected cultural, social and economic aspects of the autonomous Community of Andalusia within the past year. The different categories of the Awards are: press, radio, television, photography and internet.
