The lead candidate for Germany's far-right AfD in a northeastern state predicted Monday that Chancellor Friedrich Merz will be out of power by the end of the year after his CDU party suffered heavy losses in two regional elections.
"I believe the chancellor's twilight has begun," said Leif-Erik Holm, after he led the AfD to first place in Sunday's vote in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. AfD co-leader Alice Weidel said her party, which also made strong gains in Berlin, had "replaced" the CDU as the "people's party" in Germany.
