Venezuela interim leader arrives for UNGA, meets Trump Tuesday

Venezuela's interim president Delcy Rodriguez arrived in the United States on Monday to attend annual gathering of world leaders at the UN and meet President Donald Trump.

Rodriguez's attendance at the United Nations General Assembly marks the first by a Venezuelan head of state since deposed president Nicolas Maduro was captured in a US military raid in January.

As Maduro awaits trial on drug trafficking and other charges in a New York federal prison Rodriguez, who was his vice president and became interim leader after his ouster, was received at the United Nations by Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, Venezuelan state television reported.

"We come...seeking humanity's common destiny: peace, stability, human development, and global balance of all kinds," Rodriguez told state broadcaster VTV afterward.

Washington has said that Trump will meet with Rodriguez for the first time on Tuesday. She will address the General Assembly on Wednesday.

Under Rodriguez, there has been a sea change in Venezuela's adversarial relationship with the United States. She has so far cooperated with Trump's demands, including granting US access to Venezuela's vast oil reserves, the largest in the world.

Under a recent agreement, the two countries announced that the US will be granted control of about one-fifth of Venezuela's reserves.

Also Monday, Rodriguez met with top executives from the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank and the Inter-American Development Bank -- multilateral lenders that have resumed ties with Venezuela in recent months.
