IN SUMMARY
Neighbouring rights deal and
journalists
The European Directive creating neighbouring rights for
the benefit of news agencies contains a clause requiring an
appropriate and equitable share of the resulting remune
ration to be paid to journalists in EU countries Applying
this principle for France AFP concluded a company agree
ment with the CGT FO and SNJ trade unions for a fixed pe
riod until December 31 2024 The agreement provided for
the payment in September of a lump sum of 310 euros in
France 275 euros per annum over the two following years
Neighbouring rights and this obligation do not exist outside
the European Union However AFP decided to pay perma
nent journalist staff even in countries where there is no le
