Fact-checking Journalist - Athens

THE JOB

 

AFP is seeking an experienced English-language journalist with strong digital investigation skills to join its Athens bureau on a fixed-term contract as part of the global fact-checking team. Your main duties include the following:

 

  • Lead AFP’s digital verification in Greek;

  • Work under the day-to-day supervision of the Athens Bureau Chief or his deputy, and overall supervision of the Fact-Checking Services based in Paris;

  • Work faithfully and diligently undertake such duties and exercise such powers in relation to AFP and its business as AFP shall from time to time assign to or vest in;

  • Ensure that fact-checking work follows AFP standards for impartiality, accuracy, speed and good journalistic practice;

  • Maintain a steady and regular production of fact checks about disinformation on social media in both Greek and English Languages. Will do her best to increase this level of production over months, while keeping in mind the necessity of a high quality production;

  • Target rumors, hoaxes or falsifications that circulate and continue to have a significant impact on news or public disclosure or the actions of people;

  • Work closely with the editorial team to find newsworthy items to fact-check;

  • Devote the whole of your time and attention and skill to the discharge of the duties. 

 

These duties may be modified due to AFP’s need to adapt to economic, commercial, or technical realities. The employee hereby undertakes to undergo any training requested by AFP, to update her professional skills and to accept any resultant change in his / her duties.

 

SKILLS REQUIRED

 

Use of social media (Facebook, Instagram, X, TikTok…) and networking apps is essential, in accordance with the guidelines for using social networks as an AFP journalist.

 

In an ever-changing media environment, the nature of the job could evolve in line with coverage demands and the requirements of an increasingly diverse client base.
