Located 29 nautical miles off the coast of Taizhou in Zhejiang Province, Dachen consists of two islets—Upper and Lower Dachen. Though the island is a two-hour boat ride from the mainland, it’s at the forefront of China’s green energy transformation.

Once a test site for early wind turbines, Dachen now operates some of the world’s most advanced energy technologies, including a pioneering 20 Hz flexible low-frequency power transmission system—an international first.

“This system reduces the charging power demand of submarine cables, lowers investment costs, and stabilizes the grid,” said Zhang Ye, Deputy Director at State Grid Zhejiang Taizhou Power Supply Company. “It’s a key breakthrough for long-distance offshore wind transmission.”

The island’s journey from energy scarcity to surplus is just as compelling. In the past, Dachen relied on diesel generators, going dark at night. That began to change in 2009, when it shifted to wind energy. Today, Dachen generates over 60 million kilowatt-hours of clean electricity annually—six times its own needs—with the excess sent back to the mainland.

Three retired turbine blades now stand outside the island’s power station as quiet symbols of that transformation. “We’re not just carbon-neutral—we’re power exporters,” said Jiang Weijian, director of the station.

This energy shift is benefiting local industries. The island’s signature yellow croaker fish is now farmed with electric-powered systems, replacing diesel and reducing costs and emissions. Tourism has also surged, with visitors drawn to Dachen’s electric homestays, green transport, and fully renewable infrastructure.

Dachen’s transformation underscores Taizhou Power Supply Company’s leadership in clean energy innovation. From its offshore turbines to its pioneering grid technology, Dachen Island is a beacon for China’s clean energy ambitions—proving that a net-zero future is not a distant dream, but a working reality.
