Phil Chetwynd on France 24: AI and the Future of Journalism

AFP’s Global News Director, Phil Chetwynd, appeared on France 24’s Scoop on Friday, 7 February, to discuss artificial intelligence and its impact on journalism.

In conversation with host William Hilderbrandt, Chetwynd addressed the ethical challenges posed by AI, the opportunities it presents for investigative reporting, and how newsrooms are adapting to its rapid evolution. He highlighted both the risks of AI-generated disinformation and its potential to enhance journalism through advanced data analysis.

“The industry as a whole worries about the impact on what we would call the integrity of information. Our concern is that through AI, you'll be able to create vast amounts of poor-quality information [and disinformation] that will flood the information ecosystem,” Chetwynd said. “On the upside, there's also tremendous investigative reporting being done with AI tools, and its ability to crunch data is really strong,” he added.

Chetwynd also discussed AFP’s partnership with Mistral AI, which aims to strengthen the information ecosystem by ensuring fact-based, reliable content is integrated into AI models. He emphasised the importance of working with technology companies to uphold quality journalism in an evolving media landscape.
