International Women’s Day: AFP production in the French and international news headlines
For the International Women's Day, AFP made a series of photo and video portraits of women working in jobs traditionally considered to be male-dominated.

The photo series has more than 1,000 downloads by international media: from Australia to South Africa to the Gulf and the United States. AFP journalists went to meet 45 women. Mechanic, pilot, stuntwoman, soldier, astronaut or even butcher, they share their ambitions, how to succeed in finding their own place in traditionally male workplace environments and how to overcome discrimination.
The video series was covered by about 30 channels, almost 70% of them were international ones: BBC News, BBC World News, Sky News Arabia, Voice of America…
Top 3 most covered videos:
- Portrait of Mervat Bukhari, a force of nature draped head-to-toe in Islamic niqab, braved insults and taunts to become the first Saudi woman to work at a gas station
- Portrait of Wendy Lawrence, NASA's former woman astronaut, who logged over 1,200 hours in space
- Portrait of Captain Sandra Hernandez, the only female helicopter pilot in El Salvador’s contingent of the UN’s Mali peacekeeping mission
