From solar energy to industrial refrigeration: GreenYellow supports Frigoríficos BLE in the next stage of its decarbonization journey

In the meat processing industry, temperature control is essential to preserve product quality and ensure the continuity of the cold chain. As part of the development of its operations, Frigoríficos BLE, a major player in Colombia’s meat processing industry, has partnered with GreenYellow, an international leader in decarbonization and flexible electrification, to modernize its industrial refrigeration infrastructure.

After supporting Frigoríficos BLE in local renewable energy generation through the installation of nearly 800 kWp of photovoltaic carports, producing more than 1.1 GWh of electricity per year, GreenYellow is now addressing another key electrification lever: industrial refrigeration.

GreenYellow has designed, financed and deployed a new refrigeration solution covering more than 1,200 m² of space dedicated to Frigoríficos BLE’s operations. The new infrastructure includes maturing, shipping, deboning and plant holding areas , strengthening temperature control at different stages of the process, reinforcing the cold chain and supporting the company’s increased production capacity.

The project provides 189 TR of capacity on the recirculated system and 84.1 TR on the DX system . Its design and deployment also addressed a major operational challenge: integrating the new infrastructure while enabling Frigoríficos BLE to maintain its operations throughout the construction works.

“For us, it was essential to continue raising the standards of our operations and ensure better temperature control at a critical stage of the process. This project gives us facilities suited to managing our products, strengthens our cold chain and enables us to meet our customers’ quality requirements, while increasing our capacity to support our continued growth,” said Juan Pablo Uribe, General Manager of Frigoríficos BLE.

An integrated energy infrastructure, from investment to performance

For this project, GreenYellow is financing 100% of the investment and is responsible for the study, design, engineering and construction, as well as the operation and maintenance of the infrastructure throughout the contract term.

This Energy-as-a-Service model enables Frigoríficos BLE to benefit from a high-efficiency industrial infrastructure without mobilizing CAPEX , backed by GreenYellow’s technical, operational and financial expertise to ensure its performance and availability over the long term.

The solution is expected to save approximately 863 MWh of energy per year, representing a 25% reduction in energy consumption , and avoid nearly 544 tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually .

“Our support for Frigoríficos BLE illustrates our conviction that an industrial company’s energy transformation cannot be reduced to a single project or technology. It is about identifying the site’s key performance levers over time and addressing them in a complementary way. After renewable electricity generation, we are now addressing a major industrial use: refrigeration,” added Pilar Yepes, General Manager and Commercial Director of GreenYellow Colombia.

“This project also represented a significant engineering challenge: designing, building and integrating new refrigeration infrastructure while enabling Frigoríficos BLE to maintain its day-to-day operations. This required rigorous planning, continuous coordination and phased execution to work on the existing infrastructure without compromising operational continuity. The result is a tailor-made solution designed around the company’s operations, strengthening the cold chain, increasing its capacity and reducing energy consumption by 25%,” concluded Franco Damaris, Energy Efficiency Director at GreenYellow Colombia.

An integrated approach to supporting the energy transformation of industrial companies

Beyond a single project or technology, decarbonizing industrial sites relies on combining multiple levers tailored to the specific uses and challenges of each site. Energy efficiency, electrification, renewable electricity generation, energy storage and flexibility can therefore be deployed in a complementary way to optimize infrastructure over the long term.

This approach enables site-specific energy challenges to be addressed while embedding the necessary transformations into a sustainable pathway towards competitiveness and decarbonization.
