Early career Journalist on the English Europe/Africa desk

Agence France-Presse is looking for early career journalists to bring new talent into our global network.

AFP, whose headquarters are in Paris, is one of the world's three biggest news agencies, with 1,700 journalists working in 150 countries and six languages.

The job, based in London or Paris, is for an initial six months of full-time employment, and is designed as a springboard to our wider network for those who show promise.

Successful candidates will work on the Europe/Africa desk, which edits and publishes English-language copy from around region.

 

ABOUT THIS ROLE

Participants will:

  • learn AFP style as well as its ethics and writing standards

  • adapt French-language stories for the English-language wire

  • edit stories under the supervision of senior colleagues for publication

There will be occasional opportunities, alongside London bureau journalists to observe or participate in the process of news gathering and production.

The EC contract is primarily an office-based, editing desk job but the skills acquired on the desk are some of the fundamental tools needed in AFP’s reporting bureaus around the world.

 

SKILLS REQUIRED

Participants must have:

  • strong English-writing skills

  • proven French language knowledge

  • a strong interest in international news and a broad range of subjects

  • a willingness to accept feedback, instruction and mentoring

Prior journalism experience is an advantage, as are NCTJ or equivalent journalism qualifications, but not compulsory.

Candidates must already have the necessary documents to work in at least one of the two locations (Paris or London).
