AFP photos bring World Cup to Newseum visitors

Agence France-Presse is bringing the World Cup to the Newseum, the journalism museum in Washington, with giant screen projections of the best photos of the tournament.

A screen in the Newseum food court and another in the main building feature a constantly updated stream of AFP's World Cup action shots from South Africa. "With the electronic photos display you show the event as it's unfolding," said Newseum deputy director Susan Bennett. "We wanted to have the immediacy, so we've chosen to show an electronic version of it.

"That's why we wanted to be a home for AFP pictures."

Agence France-Presse has deployed a team of more than 100 reporters, photographers and editors for the month-long World Cup finals in South Africa. The Newseum, which opened its doors in April 2008 and traces the history of news from the first scribblings on clay to the digital age, received more than 700,000 visitors last year.

More than 10 years in the making, the Newseum is located on Pennsylvania Avenue, half-way between the White House and the US Capitol.
