AFP Foundation launches 2010 Kate Webb Prize
The AFP Foundation today called for submissions for the 2010 AFP Kate Webb Prize to recognize exceptional work produced while reporting in dangerous or difficult circumstances in Asia.
The winner will receive a certificate and 3,000 euros in cash.
Open to reporters, photographers and video journalists based in Asia, the prize is to be given for work published or aired between Jan. 1 and December 31, 2010.
The deadline for applications is Jan. 15, 2011 and the prize is to be handed out on or around Webb's birth anniversary on March 24, 2011.
The prize was launched in 2008 in honour of Webb, a legendary Agence France-Presse correspondent in Asia. The inaugural prize was given to Pakistani journalist Mushtaq Yusufzai , who reports out of a restive tribal haven of Al-Qaeda loyalists. Peshawar-based Yusufzai, who had been wounded by the Taliban and arrested by security forces in pursuit of his stories, won the prize for in-depth reports, analyses and blogs shedding light on the complex region.
The 2009 prize was awarded to the Philippine Center For Investigative Journalism, which was chosen for its fearless work in the deadliest country for reporters. The PCIJ has for two decades braved the wrath of powerful interests in the Philippines to expose corruption, the dangers of which were highlighted when 57 people including 32 Filipino journalists and media workers were killed in a political massacre in the southern province of Mindanao on November 23, 2009.
Applicants are required to submit the following via email:
- A letter to the AFP Foundation explaining why you deserve the prize including a CV with two professional references.
