The international jury of the Bayeux-Calvados prize for war correspondents has recognised AFP journalist Sara Hussein for her reporting from the frontline in Libya.

Hussein, a 27-year-old reporter based at AFP’s Jerusalem bureau, emerged from a shortlist of five journalists to win the award in the “Young Reporter” category for a series of three dispatches entitled “The Libyan Revolution”.

AFP photographer Pedro Pardo came second in the photo category for his coverage of the war between Mexico's drug cartels. Pardo joined AFP in 2009 and is currently based in Acapulco.

The Bayeux-Calvados Award for war correspondents rewards reports about a conflict situation or its impact on civilians, or news stories about the defence of freedom and democracy. The prize has been awarded by the French city of Bayeux since 1994.

The 2011 edition of the prize examined 280 entries, up from 233 entries the previous year, of which 55 were shortlisted by the judges. The jury was chaired by American writer and journalist Mort Rosenblum.
