GreenYellow supports Biedronka’s decarbonization strategy with more than 2,300 photovoltaic installations in Poland

Press release from GreenYellow-Tuesday 29 September 2026.
117 MWp of solar capacity deployed across more than 2,300 stores: GreenYellow, a global player in decarbonization and flexible electrification, is supporting Biedronka, Poland’s leading food retailer, in decarbonizing its network. This large-scale project is one of the largest multisite rooftop solar programs across commercial buildings in Europe and the largest solar self-consumption project in Poland.
Local energy production driving shopping centres decarbonization
The photovoltaic installations currently generate + 113 GWh of renewable electricity per year , equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of more than 61,700 Polish households , based on average household electricity consumption in Poland.
Covering a total rooftop area equivalent to nearly 92 football pitches , the installations also help avoid + 62,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions each year .
All the electricity generated is consumed directly at Biedronka stores , meeting their on-site energy needs. This local energy production is particularly relevant for the retail sector, where energy consumption is continuous and largely driven by essential equipment such as refrigeration, lighting and air conditioning.
“The success of a project of this magnitude is not only based on photovoltaic technology, but above all on our ability to rapidly deploy energy solutions on a very large scale. We are currently commissioning an average of 2.3 MWp of new capacity every month, equivalent to around 50 new installations, across hundreds of sites throughout Poland. Each store comes with its own set of constraints, from grid connection and permitting to rooftop structural assessments, fire safety requirements and technical inspections. Our role is to manage this complexity end-to-end, allowing Biedronka to remain focused on its core business,” explains Adam Dominiak, General Manager, GreenYellow Poland & Central Europe .
An Energy-as-a-Service approach to accelerate the energy transition
For Biedronka, GreenYellow manages the entire project, from design through to operation , under a PV-as-a-Service model.
GreenYellow studies, finances, designs, builds, operates and maintains the photovoltaic installations, enabling Biedronka to accelerate the deployment of renewable energy generation across its network without having to commit its own CAPEX.
This approach progressively transforms commercial buildings into energy assets , bringing energy production closer to consumption and maximizing the value of locally generated electricity.
“Given the scale of our network, electricity is a strategic resource for ensuring the day-to-day operation of our stores. It is essential not only during opening hours, but also for refrigeration equipment and other technical systems that operate continuously. Our collaboration with GreenYellow allows us to gradually equip more stores and directly consume the solar energy generated on their rooftops,” says Natalia Rompska-Żuk, Senior Energy Management Manager at Biedronka .
Scaling up while adapting to each site
Although the program now comprises more than 2,300 installations , each project is designed according to the specific characteristics of the individual store.
This ability to combine industrial-scale deployment with local adaptation is at the heart of GreenYellow’s approach. It enables the optimization of both energy production and self-consumption at each site, while ensuring consistent deployment across a network spanning several thousand locations.
Beyond photovoltaics, this approach illustrates how energy is increasingly becoming a strategic lever for performance and decarbonization for multisite businesses.
With Biedronka, GreenYellow demonstrates its ability to support organizations with complex, energy-intensive networks in moving towards a new energy era : producing renewable energy locally, electrifying uses and, tomorrow, increasing flexibility to optimize the energy and economic performance of their sites.
