The Japan correspondent, writing in English but with fluent Japanese, is core to our coverage. The job is extremely diverse, including breaking news, analysis and feature pieces.
Economic coverage, including daily stock reports and quarterly indicators and earnings, is also an important component of the job. The correspondent is also expected to generate original, imaginative and lively feature and focus stories.
Reaching younger audiences is central to our coverage and the successful candidate will be packed with bright multimedia ideas that boost the file.
The successful candidate will be an experienced multimedia journalist (minimum 5 years of experience) with top-notch writing and reporting skills, and a proven ability to generate lively copy to deadline on a broad range of topics.
The correspondent will be a good team player in an international workplace, able to spot and report stories of interest to AFP’s readers around the world.
The news flow can be very heavy at times, and the correspondent must be able to work under pressure. They must be prepared to work flexible hours when needed, including weekends.
Candidates should have an interest in social media and participate in social networking on a voluntary basis.
The successful candidate must have native-level Japanese proficiency and professional-level English. A command of French would be an advantage but is not required. Video and photo skills would also be an asset but are not essential.
