Rafael Nadal defeated Spanish compatriot David Ferrer 7-6 (7/1), 7-5 on Sunday to win a seventh Barcelona Open title.

It was Nadal's 34th successive match victory on the Barcelona clay and his triumph on Sunday came a week after he secured an eighth Monte Carlo Masters crown.

The world number two, who now has 48 career titles, also becomes the only man to win two ATP events more than seven times each.

Sunday's final was the 10 between Spaniards at the tournament since the Open era from 1968, the sixth involving Nadal and the fourth in five years between Nadal and Ferrer.

Spaniards have won the home title for the past 10 years since 2003.
