What does RSS stand for and what is it used for?

RSS is an increasingly popular XML-based file format for web syndication used by news websites and weblogs to share and distribute Web content. In simple terms, RSS allows you to identify content you are interested in, such as news headlines, and provides these items listed, each containing a headline and short descriptions and link to the full version of the content. The delivery of this information is what we call the RSS feed. Throughout our web pages this icon: rss will link you to our site's RSS feeds.

How can I use RSS?

Unless your browser already supports RSS feeds (such as Mozilla Firefox and Safari), in order to start using RSS you would need to download an RSS news reader. Some, as mentioned, are accessed using a browser; others however, are stand-alone applications. In sum, a reader allows you to download and display the RSS feeds of your choice all in one place. In addition, by automatically retrieving updates, and RSS reader allows you to stay up-to-date with the latest news headlines.

How to get a news reader?

There is a wide range of RSS readers available and many are available as free downloads. Availability of news readers however, vary depending on the different operating systems. (see RSS readers, right-hand column)
