    Director-General Irina Bokova expresses consternation at the destruction of the Temple of Bel in Palmyra

    The Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, expressed profound dismay as she condemned the destruction of the Temple of Bel in Palmyra, one of the most important 1st century CE religious monuments in the Middle East, a construction unique in its design.

    "The destruction of Palmyra constitutes an intolerable crime against civilization but 4,500 years of history will never be erased," the Director-General declared.

    Tropical forests "on the edge"

    Gland, Switzerland: Tropical rainforests could largely disappear by the end of the century, warns a new report commissioned by the Club of Rome.

    The Club of Rome, celebrated for its influential early 1970s report on The Limits to Growth, commissioned former WWF International Director-General Dr Claude Martin to write On the Edge: The State and Fate of the World's Tropical Rainforests.

    Has a 2,000 Year Old Podium Been Found in the City of David?

    An intriguing find consisting of an impressive pyramid-shaped staircase constructed of large ashlar stones was uncovered in an archaeological excavation currently conducted by the Israel Antiquities Authority. The excavation is located in the Jerusalem Walls National Park in the City of David, site of ancient Jerusalem, and is being carried out in cooperation with the Israel Nature and Parks Authority and the City of David Foundation.
