Football - Zenit to end Liverpool's European dream - Witsel

Zenit St Petersburg midfielder Axel Witsel believes the Russian champions, with a 2-0 first leg advantage, can progress to the Europa League last 16 at Liverpool's expense on Thursday.

Last week Brazilian striker Hulk and verteran midfielder Sergei Semak struck in the space of three second half minutes to leave Liverpool with a mountain to climb at Anfield in the return leg.

    Football - Malaysia police arrest 137 in gambling bust

    Malaysian police said Thursday they arrested 137 people, mostly from China and Taiwan, as they busted a ring that bet on English football, staged online gambling, and carried out online scams.

    Five of those arrested were Malaysians while the rest were from China and Taiwan, said Abdul Rashid Abdul Wahab, police chief of the city of Kajang where the ring was based.

    Soccer - Chelsea reach Champions League semi-finals

    Chelsea reached the Champions League semi-finals after beating 10-man Benfica of Portugal 2-1 in their quarter-final second leg clash and 3-1 on aggregate.

    A penalty from Frank Lampard gave them a first-half lead before the visitors were reduced to 10 men in the 40th minute as captain Maxi Pereira was sent off for a second bookable offence by Slovenian referee Damir Skomina.

    Soccer - Football: Real Madrid reach Champions League semi-finals

    Nine-time champions Real Madrid qualified for the Champions League semi-finals after beating APOEL Nicosia of Cyprus 5-2 in their quarter-final second-leg clash in Madrid for an 8-2 aggregate success.

    A double from Cristiano Ronaldo, along with further goals from Kaka, Angel Di Maria and Jose Maria Callejon ensured the Spanish giants will meet Bayern Munich - who beat French side Marseille 2-0 on Tuesday and 4-0 on aggregate - in the final four.

    Football - French court throws out Ginola claim against Houllier

    A court in Toulon has rejected David Ginola's claim for damages against former France coach Gerard Houllier over remarks concerning Ginola's role in France's failure to reach the 1994 World Cup.

    Houllier had used strong language to criticise Ginola in a book and the former Paris Saint-Germain and Newcastle United winger was seeking 5,000 euros ($6,600) in damages for slander and defamation.

    Football - Poland hunts for Euro 2012 anthem

    Fans of both music and football will have the final say on Poland's official team song for the looming European championships on home soil, the Polish FA announced.

    The football association, or PZPN, said entries for its "White and Red Hit" competition would be accepted from allcomers by an April 13 deadline.

    "The contest is open to stars of the Polish music scene and amateurs alike," the PZPN said.

    Football - Euro 2012 groundsmen get refresher course

    With two months left until kick-off in Euro 2012, European football's governing body UEFA is training groundsmen from host nations Poland and Ukraine to ensure the pitches will be up to scratch.

    Some 40 participants are taking part in a course at the Henryk Reyman Stadium in the southern city of Krakow, said Adrian Ochalik, spokesman for top-flight club Wisla who play there.

    Football - Leopards deal blow to Chiefs title hopes

    Kaizer Chiefs' title hopes suffered a major blow on Tuesday as struggling Black Leopards beat them 1-0 in their South African Premiership clash.

    David Zulu scored his first ever goal at this level in the 84th minute, which proved enough to defeat the Chiefs at FNB Stadium in Johannesburg.

    The Chiefs remain fourth in the table, with the Leopards still third from bottom.

    Football - Lucky number seven as Gamba end drought

    Gamba Osaka finally won their first game of the season at the seventh attempt Tuesday as Japanese clubs ran riot in the AFC Champions League.

    Gamba, who had gone six J-League and Champions League games without a win and dumped their coach last week, were aided by two second-half penalties as they overcame Uzbekistan's Bunyodkor 3-1 in Group E.

    Football - Brazil Senate cancels meet with FIFA's Valcke

    A panel of the Brazilian Senate on Tuesday canceled a planned meeting with FIFA secretary general Jerome Valcke, who last month caused an uproar with his outspoken criticism of the country's 2014 World Cup preparations.

    Valcke was supposed to have been received by the Senate's education, culture and sports commission but "the meeting was canceled," the panel's secretary, Julio Linares, told AFP.

    Argentina's fourth-seeded Juan Monaco outlasted US qualifier Michael Russell 5-7, 6-1, 6-4 to reach the final of the $442,500 ATP US Men's Clay Court Championship, where he will play US second seed John Isner.

    In the other semi-final, Isner outlasted Spanish third seed Feliciano Lopez 6-7 (5/7), 7-6 (7/4), 6-3.

    Nicolas Almagro has been drawn to open holders' Spain's Davis Cup quarter-final clash against Austrian number one Jurgen Melzer here on Friday.

    Tennis - Seventh-seed Jankovic loses to Venus in Charleston

    In a clash of former world number ones, unseeded Venus Williams toppled seventh-seeded Jelena Jankovic 7-5, 6-0 to reach the third round of the WTA's green clay Charleston tournament.

    Jankovic had won her last four meetings on clay against Williams, but once the American heated up in the wake of a first-set rain delay on Wednesday, the Serbian couldn't stop her.

    Jankovic served for the first set at 5-4, but Williams broke and never looked back.
