Romania parliament votes to impeach president

BUCHAREST (AFP)

Romania's parliament voted Friday to impeach the centre-right President Traian Basescu in a political crisis that has raised fears that the country's democracy is under threat.

A total of 258 lawmakers out of 432 voted in favour of the move against Basescu, said Dan Radu, a senator with the governing Liberal Social Union (USL) coalition.
