Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas pledged Sunday to resume efforts at reconciliation between rival Palestinian factions as he returned from a successful bid for upgraded UN status.

"We will study over the course of the coming days the steps necessary to achieve reconciliation," Abbas said in an address to thousands of cheering Palestinians gathered in Ramallah to welcome him back from New York.
